Pauwels and Meeusen victorious in Hasselt and Druivencross

08-12-2014Last cyclocross weekend was very successful for Ridley and 4ZA Components. On Saturday, Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Napoleon Games) won the Bpost bank Trophy in Hasselt. On Sunday, it was Tom Meeusen's (Telenet-Fidea) turn to celebrate. Both riders are on a Ridley X-Night with 4ZA Components. In the youth categories, there were also a lot of good performances, including a full Ridley podium at the junior race in Hasselt.

Hasselt was a fast course, so something right up the alley of Kevin Pauwels. After the first couple of laps he was in the lead together with Van Aert. Only Meeusen was able to follow for a little while.  He won the sprint for 3rd place against Nys.

In the front, Pauwels was piling on the pressure. Van Aert had to close a gap several times, but managed to hold on until the final lap. Pauwels opened up a gap after a smooth passage through the sand and increased his lead in the technical corners. In the end, Van Aert finished 3 seconds behind Pauwels.

Kevin Pauwels: "Today I felt really good. With Van Aert I had the perfect companion after my fast start. At the moment we are slightly better than the rest, especially in the fast races. I am very happy to win here in Hasselt! This is turning out to be a great season for me!" Pauwels leads the Superprestige and World Cup GC, and is second in the Bpost bank Trophy.

The mother of all crosses, that is the nickname of the Druivencross in Overijse. The slippery course suited acrobats Meeusen and Van der Poel very well. They were in the lead group with Walsleben and Vantornout. Van der Poel accelerated halfway through the race. With three laps to go, the gap grew up to 10 seconds. It looked like the Dutchman was going to win, but he made a few mistakes because of fatigue. Meeusen brought the others back to the front, and they entered the final lap with 4 riders. Meeusen took the lead just before the final muddy sections, and nobody was able to counter him. Vantornout became 2nd, Van der Poel 3rd.

Meeusen: "From the moment I hit the final corner in first position, I knew the win was mine! I did not waste too much energy in the race, and was able to finish it off in the sprint. I am very happy to be able to win the classic cyclocross race. It looks nice on my palmares!"
