Pauwels takes the win in Superprestige Zonhoven

02-11-2014Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Napoleon Games) has won the Superprestige race in Zonhoven (Belgium) on his Ridley X-Night with 4ZA Components. For a long time, Sven Nys was in the best position to win the race, but a very strong Pauwels was able to finish it off in the sprint.

The Superprestige race in Zonhoven is always very spectacular. Tim Merlier was the first (but not the last) to crash in the famous sand pit. Klaas Vantornout did the same a few laps later, and lost contact with the leaders. Nys and Meeusen kept going strong but a few riders were able to close the gap. First Van der Haar made it to the leaders. After him, Pauwels was able to make the connection. He was never really in the picture before, but was able to gradually move up to the front.

Nys kept piling on the pressure, and Meeusen could not follow. In the last lap Van der Haar lost contact because of a few minor mistakes. Pauwels and Nys were left to battle it out. Nys passed Pauwels in a long sandy stretch with an impressive acceleration. The race seemed to be over, but in the last corners Pauwels had closed the gap to within striking distance. With a powerful sprint Pauwels passed a worn out Nys, and took his first big victory of the season!

Kevin Pauwels: "I had to chase for almost the entire race. One moment, I did not even know in which place I was riding, but then I saw Nys in the group in front of me. That's when I knew I could go for the win. I never gave up, even when Nys passed me in the sand. I gave it all I got, and in the end I was able to sprint to victory. I am extremely happy! This isn't a course that really suits me. I don't like the sand as much as some other riders, but this proves my form is getting better each week. Now I can concentrate on the GC as well!"
